Watering Guidelines

Remember that most plants need at least a year to establish themselves in the landscape. This means they are relying on you to get adequate moisture. Try to water between 5am and 11am to reduce evaporation and prevent fungile diseases. As a general rule a plant in a one or two gallon pot requires between 3-6 gallons of water a week in summer. Of course this is not set in stone. Just be careful , a day of light rain is not sufficient for newly planted trees and shrubs. A light rain is considered less than a half inch. Watering of new plantings in dry spells is sometimes necessary for several years. When leaves are drooping or wilting, most likely your plant needs water immediately! LandCare provides watering services for your newly planted landscape, contact us. We recomend all new tree plantings be planted along with a 20 gal. tree watering bag. (Gator Bag).

             10 Water Smart Tips

1. Group plants according to water requirements to avoid over-or-under-watering.
2. Mulch to reduce moisture evaporation.
3. Fertilize properly-too much stimulates thirsty new growth.
4. Pruning keeps plants strong and less water dependent.
5. Prioritize watering. New plants need more frequent watering than established trees and shrubs.
6. Adjust sprinklers so water reaches lawns and gardens, not pavement.
7. Time -your-watering, Water early to decrease evaporation. Avoid windy days for the same reason.
8. Water infrequently, deeply, and thoroughly. This stops wasteful runoff and encourages deeper root development. Plants with deep roots develop greater tolerance to dry spells.
9. Remove weeds. Weeds rob water and nutrients from valuable plants.
10. Watch the weather. Don't irrigate if rain is predicted. Skip at least one watering after a good rain. Cut back watering times and frequencies in cool and/or humid weather.
